from the Wewelsfleth Dockyard

The "Peters Schiffbau" dockyard in Wewelsfleth is one of our most interesting working places in the region.

"Peters Schiffbau" offers the construction of container ships up to 900 TEU, multi-purpose ships, special-purpose ships, and mega-yachts. But amongst other things they also survey, repair, and extend ships.

A few months ago we went to the dockyard talked to a worker from "Peters Schiffbau" who showed us around:



Little GEMs:
How many workers are working at the Wewels- fleth Dockyard "Peters Schiffbau", the so called "Peterswerft"?


Worker:  There are 68 employees, men and women. But as other companies are working as subsidiaries at the dockyard as well, about 400 to 450 workers are here every day.


Little GEMs: How many ships per year do you build?

Worker:  Usually we finish one ship per year.


Little GEMs: How long does it take to finish a ship?

Worker:  It depends on how big it is. Usually it takes you about 9 to 12 months.

Little GEMs: How many buildings does the dockyard comprise?

Worker:  The "Peterswerft" comprises 15 buildings.


Little GEMs: When was the "Peterswerft" constructed?

Worker:  The first buildings were constructed in 1871.

Little GEMs: How many women are employed at "Peterswerft"?

Worker:  We have 14 women who are employees and 2 young ladies in professional education.

Little GEMs: Does the petrol station nearby belong to the dockyard?

Worker:  Yes, it does.  

Little GEMs: What are the workers' jobs at "Peterswerft"?

Worker:  Most of the are professional ship constructors. Sometimes they have got to work from 7 o'clock in the morning until 4 o'clock in the morning the next day!


Little GEMs: How long and how large is the dockyard?

Worker:  It is about 400 to 700 meters long and 300 meters large.


Little GEMs: What is "Peterswerft" 's current job?

Worker:  Currently our main job is to build a luxury mega-yacht.


Little GEMs: Which one has been the dockyard's biggest job so far?

Worker:  The luxury mega-yacht. we are currently building has been our biggest job so far.


Little GEMs: Which countries do your workers come from?

Worker:  The come from Germany, Croatia and Poland.
